"Russia has ultimately doomed itself to isolation from the civilized world. The espionage charges filed against Roman Sushchenko - a Ukrainian citizen and correspondent for Ukrinform National News Agency - are another proof of mass scale and repeated violation of human rights through persecution, arrests and trials for trumped-up charges.
"I personally condemn the arrest of Roman Sushchenko and urge the international community and international human rights organizations to come out for Ukrainian journalists and other Ukrainian citizens who have become political prisoners," the prime minister said.
Earlier, members of Moscow Public Monitoring Commission have found correspondent for Ukrinform news agency Roman Sushchenko in Lefortovo prison. The Lefortovo court of Moscow arrested the journalist on charges of espionage (article 276 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) for two months.
Later, Ukraine's Information Policy Ministry confirmed the detention of Sushchenko. The ministry said its legal department was collecting necessary information on the circumstances and reasons for the detention.
In turn, the FSB (Russian Federal Security Service) claims Ukrainian journalist Sushchenko is the agent of Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine: "The case was initiated into charges of espionage."
