 Lenin monument standing atop New York building since 1989 dismantled. PHOTOS

Lenin sculpture was dismantled from the roof of a house in East Village, Manhattan, New York. The monument has been standing there for over 20 years and has become a local landmark.

No reasons for the dismantle have been reported. However, it is known that the building has recently changed its owner. It was purchased by Dermot Company for $100 million. The monument was removed by a crane and taken away by a truck. Its further fate is unknown. The sculpture might be replaced after cleaning and restoration.

The five-meter high statue was crafted by sculptor Yuri Gerasimov in the USSR. The residential compound topped by the monument is called the Red Square. It was built in 1989 prior to the breakup of the Soviet Union.
