 Ukrainian army became considerably stronger over past two years, Former Pentagon Chief Panetta says

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta praised the reforms implemented in the Ukrainian army over the past two years.

As reported by Censor.NET, the official said in an interview with LІGA.net.

Leon Panetta believes that the Ukrainian army and defense sector have become stronger over the past two years. He said all of his Ukrainian interlocutors confirmed that officers were efficient; the military were better trained; they were able to cope with combat situations. The former U.S. Secretary of Defense said he could tell from his experience that such increase of military capability was a great success indeed.

Leon Panetta also said that the U.S. would continue providing assistance and training to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He added that depending on the outcome of this assistance, the U.S. would determine what further steps to take so that Ukraine could defend itself.

He served in the Obama administration as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2009 to 2011, and as Secretary of Defense from 2011 to 2013. A Democrat, Panetta was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1977 to 1993, served as Director of the Office of Management and Budget from 1993 to 1994, and as President Bill Clinton's Chief of Staff from 1994 to 1997. As CIA Director, Leon Panetta streamlined the elimination of the jihadist leaders in the Middle East with drones and was in charge of the operation which culminated in elimination of Osama bin Laden.
