Foreign Ministry: Ukraine condemns Russian "elections" in occupied Crimea

Ukraine condemns "elections" to the State Duma of the Russian Federation organized by Russia in the territory of occupied Crimea and Sevastopol. Ukrainian government intends to provide its international partners with a list of the individuals directly involved in the organization of this process in Crimea as well as the participants in the illegal "elections" to include them in the sanctions lists.

Censor.NET reports citing the official statement made by the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

"Ukraine strongly condemns the "election" to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the seventh convocation organized by the Russian Federation in the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol temporarily occupied by it.... The inclusion of the integral part of the sovereign territory of Ukraine to the Russia's single federal electoral district along with the creation of four single-mandate majoritarian constituencies on the Crimean peninsula by Russia is a flagrant violation of the fundamental norms and principles of the international law. Therefore, the elections results and powers of the four State Duma deputies elected in the occupied Crimea under the majority system and 225 MPs elected under the proportional system are void and illegitimate which casts doubt on the legitimacy of the entire State Duma," the statement reads.

"In this regard, we recall that according to the resolution No. A/RES/68/262 "The territorial integrity of Ukraine", approved by 100 countries of the world, the United Nations General Assembly called upon all the states, international organizations and specialized agencies to recognize no change to the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol and refrain from any actions or steps that could be interpreted as the recognition of the changed status. That is why Ukraine counts on the consistency of its partners and their commitment to the international law and respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine. We call on not to recognize the results of the elections to the State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation as it pertains to the voting in the occupied Crimean peninsula. The Ukrainian government also intends to submit to its international partners a list of the individuals directly involved in the organization of the "rigged elections" in Crimea as well as those who took part in the illegal "elections" to include them in the sanctions lists," the agency noted.
