 Police apprehends Zatoka village council secretary who ordered hit of human rights activist, - Dekanoidze

The human rights activist who was put a hit on acted on behalf of an Estonian businessman intending to invest several million dollars in Zatoka resort village in the Odesa Region.

As reported by Censor.NET citing 112 Ukraine, National Police Head Khatia Dekanoidze told a briefing.

According to her, the members of the crime ring committed arson attacks on recreation facilities, intimidated people, abducted owners of land plots, and ordered a contract killing with the aim of criminal conversion of land plots and real estate.

"A human rights activist came to the police a few months ago and reported that he was put a hit on due to the fact that he had exposed a criminal ring which was going to take over coastal lands in Zatoka. We carried out investigation in conjunction with the Prosecutor General's Office. A few weeks ago, we apprehended two hired guns, who actually intended to assassinate this person. The intermediary was also detained.

"This morning, we arrested the mastermind, who turned out to be a local official - the secretary of Zatoka village council. The information of the person who came to the police appeared to be true. He represented a very serious Estonian businessman, who actually intended to invest several million dollars in Zatoka. The mentioned criminal ring was obstructing this investment.

"The takedown team of the Internal Security Department of the National Police of Ukraine and supervisor of pre-trial proceedings of the Prosecutor General's Office did a great job indeed. Eight persons including assassins, intermediaries, and the mastermind were detained. They are currently in custody," Dekanoidze said.
