Company commander of the tank battalion of the 93rd Separate Guards Mechanized Brigade (South Operational Command), captain Lavrenko was awarded for extraordinary courage, heroism and self-sacrifice displayed while defending the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
On July 21, 2014, the tank crew commanded by Lavrenko fought a battle to capture a stronghold of the terrorists, which would make it possible for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to gain a foothold in the Donetsk airport on the outskirts of Donetsk. Having broken into the village of Pisky, the tank crew destroyed a stronghold of the terrorists and two mortar detachments. Having captured the checkpoint, the crew covered a mechanized division.
When he learned about the beginning of a counterattack of the terrorists, Lavrenko moved forward to the probable front line, breaking away from other tanks. The terrorists opened fire from grenade launchers, machine guns, and rifles. Escaping from fire, Lavrenko's tank hit a powerful landmine. The captain was seriously wounded, but did not give up to the militants and did not allow them to capture his combat vehicle. He stopped the counterattack of the terrorists at the cost of his own life.
The Tankman Day is celebrated in Ukraine today, Sept. 11.
