"We must initiate amendments of the legislation so that smuggling become a criminal offense. For smuggling deprives people of the budget revenues, salaries, pensions, robs the military of their salaries and everything else," Hroisman said at a government meeting Wednesday.
The prime minister stressed the government's principled stance regarding the fight against smuggling.
Hroisman recalled that the members of the Department combating customs related offenses at Odesa customs office had recently confiscated nine containers of cigarettes with an estimated total cost of more than 100 million hryvnia (about $3,850,000).
"I think that the concerned parties were turning themselves inside out to somehow resolve that situation. But, our principal position shows our uncompromising attitude regarding this issue. All those involved in smuggling will experience huge losses," the prime minister stressed.
