"I'm in emergency hospital. I had a hypertensive crisis during the apprehension and was taken to hospital. As for my extorting or accepting anything, this is a provocation.
"Moreover, I am the one who launched anti-corruption activities at National Aviation University, did my best to block corruption channels. We started to renovate premises, purchase equipment. We have enough money on the accounts of university. The university began to revive. This is about the election campaign. At this point, I think, we witnessed a show," Kharchenko said.
The incident may also have been provoked by the fact Kharchenko opposed the construction of a residential complex in the territory of the university.
"What is this fuss about? It's about the construction in the territory of the university. You may come and see it yourself. A massive residential complex and a stadium. The construction is underway, the documents were signed by the previous leadership. It's impossible to stop it now. There are certain commitments. In fact, the university must obtain 10 percent of the apartments but obtains just 3.8 percent. No one knows where the rest has gone," he remarked.
Another reason behind the case, according to Kharchenko, is the upcoming election of NAU rector: "They are trying to get rid of me so that I won't run for the post of rector and continue to fight corruption here."
As previously reported, the Security Service of Ukraine detained Acting Rector of Kyiv's National Aviation University Volodymyr Kharchenko while accepting 100,000 euros as a bribe.
