'Amber mafia' completely under police control, Deputy Chief Troian says

Ukraine's 'amber mafia' operating in western regions of the country and illegally mining amber for sale has been taken under control of law enforcement agencies.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was announced by first deputy chief of National Police Vadym Troian on air of 112 Ukraine.

Onsite staffs of the National Guard have been created for this purpose in key regions of amber-related illegal activities, including the Rivne, Zhytomyr and Volyn regions, he said.

"Police has taken control over the 'amber mafia' starting from areas in the Rivne region; we have an onsite staff operating there, as well as those of the National Guard functioning in the Zhytomyr and Volyn regions. There were attempts [of organizing 'amber mafia' - ed.] in the Kyiv region near the Chornobyl nuclear power plant, but we stopped it really fast, no one is showing up there," Troian commented.

He called for radical legal changes aimed at legalization of the amber mining business.

"In order to solve the issue completely, we need to significantly change the legislation and approach to the people. They should not work for hired gang leaders; they should come, register their business, or get hired with a company and work with legal salaries and taxes," the deputy chief believes.
