 Enemy steps up activity along entire contact line, 52 attacks recorded over past day, - Staff

The situation in the area of anti-terrorist operation (ATO) in the east of Ukraine remains strained but nevertheless controlled.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was stated by the ATO Staff press center in its situation report as at 6 a.m. Aug. 17.

"Militants, flagrantly violating the Minsk agreements, have intensified their activity along the entire demarcation line. Over the past day, Russian occupation troops opened fire on Ukrainian units 52 times, including 23 times at Donetsk direction, 20 near Mariupol and nine in the Luhansk region," the report notes.

According to the Staff, at Mariupol direction, the enemy fired 60 122-mm artillery rounds on Chermalyk, employed guns of the same caliber against Novoselivka and Marinka. Moreover, 152-mm artillery was used in Rybinsk. Slavne, Krasnohorivka, Lebedynske, Chermalyk and Shyrokyne came under mortar fire. In Novohryhorivka and Marinka, militants used an IFV. Sniper activity was registered in this area as well.

"At Donetsk direction, Avdiivka, Zaitseve, Maiorsk and Luhanske remain hot spots, with militants employing 120-mm and 82-mm mortars, various types of grenade launchers and heavy machine guns. The situation was also tense in Verkhniotoretske, Kamianka, Novoselivka Druha and Novhorodske," the report reads.

As also noted, Ukrainian positions in Vrubivka, the Luhansk region, came under 122-mm artillery fire.

"The enemy employed various types of grenade launchers in Stanytsia Luhanska, Novooleksandrivka and Popasna. IFV fire was registered in Popasna as well. Militants keep resorting to armed provocations using small arms. In Novooleksandrivka and Stanytsia Luhanska, sniper activity was recorded," the Staff reported.
