Russian President Putin's Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov later said that the helicopter was on a humanitarian mission.

As previously reported, on July 9, two Russian servicemen were killed near the Syrian city of Palmyra when their helicopter was shot down by rebels, bringing the number of Russian military personnel killed in the Syria conflict to at least 12.
