The ambassador said during a phone conference on Friday, asked by journalists to comment on the Russian president's decree to include Crimea in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation, Censor.NET informs citing Interfax-Ukraine.
According to the diplomat, the U.S. considers the decision of the Russian president to abolish Crimean Federal District illegal and does not recognize the annexation of Crimea.
Geoffrey Pyatt also stressed that the United States did not recognize redrawing of the existing boundaries and territories of the states, adding that Crimea was part of Ukraine.
Earlier, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine voiced protest regarding the inclusion of temporarily occupied Crimea in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin included the territory of the "Crimean Federal District" in the Southern Federal District of the Russian Federation July 28.
According to the decree, the Southern Federal District includes the Republic of Adygeya, Republic of Kalmykia, Republic of Crimea, Krasnodar Krai, Astrakhan Oblast, Volgograd Oblast, Rostov Oblast, and the city of Sevastopol.
