As noted, on July 21, in the city of Kupiansk, an organized group committed an armed attack on a bank's security car and seized 4.6 million hryvnia (approx. $185,000). Law enforcers were quick to identify one of the assailants, who turned out to be a lieutenant colonel of Ukraine's Security Service in the Kharkiv region.
During searches at the place of temporary residence of the suspect, law enforcers seized about $50,000, and Makarov and Luger pistols with ammunition.
The National Police have instituted criminal proceedings under part 4, article 187 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The lieutenant colonel is charged with a criminal offense and detained in accordance with article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
"This arrest is yet another indication that the Security Service of Ukraine is set to purge its ranks of thieves who, unfortunately, continue existing among the vast majority of honest employees," the statement notes.
