As noted, Poroshenko expressed deep concern over the drastic aggravation of the situation in the Donbas and the growing number of casualties caused by the intensification of artillery attacks by militants and ongoing armament supplies from Russia. He also drew attention to the rise in activity of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups that are effectively rebuffed by the Ukrainian military.
Poroshenko highlighted constant violations of the Minsk agreements by Russia. He stressed the importance of unity of entire Europe in the issue of not only extension of sanctions against Russia but also their strengthening should the situation in the Donbas keep deteriorating.
The parties agreed to intensify their work in the Normandy format and other formats. In particular, they discussed the elaboration of a clear road map for the implementation of the Minsk agreements, which should stipulate the observation of security provisions by Russia.
Petro Poroshenko also emphasized the need of facilitating the liberation of Ukrainian political prisoners detained in Russia and Ukrainian hostages held in the occupied part of the Donbas.
Special attention was paid to accelerating the adoption of positive decision on a visa-free regime for Ukrainians.
The Ukrainian president extended his sincere condolences over numerous victims of the recent wave of violent terrorist acts, including those in Nice and Munich.
