 Violence level on contact line increased dramatically. Number of attacks near Mariupol reached last September’s level, - OSCE

The level of violence at the demarcation line in the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) zone dramatically increased last week.

As reported by Censor.NET citing 112 Ukraine TV channel, this was said by Principal Deputy Chief Monitor of the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission (SMM) Alexander Hug at a briefing.

According to Hug, 373 attacks were recorded near Shyrokyne and Kominternove which was the highest number since last September. The OSCE official added that a sharp increase in the level of violence was recorded last week as the number of attacks increased three-fold compared to the previous week exceeding 3,000.

According to the SMM's information, the number of cease-fire violations along the Svitlodarsk-Debaltseve highway increased by 700 percent. The number of attacks committed on the western and northern suburbs of Horlivka increased by 60 percent. The main hot spot was the Avdiivka-Yasynuvata-Donetsk Airport triangle. A third part of all cease-fire violations committed last week was recorded there, the increase was 80 percent.

Hug also noted that the parties had not withdrawn all the weapons while positions were situated too close to each other in all the hot spots. According to him, last week, the SMM recorded a total of 77 weapons of various types, which had been banned and had to be withdrawn from the line of contact while only 21 such weapons had been recorded previous week. Alexander Hug added that the SMM continued observing high alert of the parties across the line of contact.

According to him, the distance between advanced military positions of the Ukrainian troops and the illegal armed groups in Stanytsia-Luhanska is just several hundred meters.
