 Rada reinforces penalties for drunk driving

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has intensified the administrative punishment for driving under influence.

243 lawmakers at the minimum of 226 required for adoption have voted for the bill No. 4373 as a whole, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

According to the bill, driving under influence of alcohol, drugs or medicines reducing driver's attention or reaction will be punished by an administrative fine of 600 basic income amounts (the current tax-exempt minimum amounts to 17 hryvnia while the fine will amount to about 10,200 hryvnia (about $408)) and deprivation of the driving right for one-year period.

According to the current Administrative Violations Code drunk driving is punished by a fine of 200 basic income amounts (3400 hryvnia (about $136)) and deprivation of driver's license for a period from one to two years.

The bill envisages that a repeated drunk driving within one year is punishable by a fine of 1,200 tax-exempt minimums (20,400 hryvnia (about $816)), and deprivation of the driving right for a three-year period.

Drinking alcohol or taking drugs by a driver following a traffic accident or after a driver has been requested by a police officer to undergo alcohol test, is punished by a fine of 1,200 tax-exempt minimums (20,400 hryvnia (about $816)), and deprivation of the driving right for a three-year period or administrative arrest for 15 days.
