The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said awarding the participants of the Semenivka battle, Censor.NET reports citing Poroshenko's Twitter.
"Today, we salute the participants of the battle at Semenivka Then our men demonstrated the aggressor what is spirit and will. Our soldiers instilled confidence in Ukrainians that they can protect our land from the terrorists' invasion," the president said.
Posroshenko also noted that the victory in a very heavy fight at Semenivka was the first and very important for Ukraine.
Head of state said that one soldier of the National Guard and two SBU officers were killed in that battle. The fallen servicemen were awarded posthumously with the Hero title.
"Today we honor the memory of those who paid the ultimate price in the battle of Semenivka for our right to live freely on our land," he stressed.
Poroshenko also said that 1,400 National Guard soldiers received the state awards during the ATO. At the same time, 746 NG soldiers were wounded in the Donbas, while 183 servicemen were killed.
Semenivka battle happened on May 5, 2014. Ukrainian units were attacked by a large force of Russian saboteurs. Commander of Sumy department of the SBU's Alfa Oleksandr Onyshchenko, instructor of Kyiv Alfa unit Ruslan Luzhevskyi, and the ensign of the Jaguar regiment Viktor Dolynskyi were killed in the battle.
