Nine crew members and 40 military of the 25th separate Dnipropetrovsk brigade were on board of the plane. All of them died.
The investigation has found that the terrorists downed the aircraft with a man-portable air-defense system.
On Dec. 17, 2015, Pavlohrad city district court of the Dnipropetrovsk region started the trial in the matter of the killing of 49 Ukrainian military in the Il-76 plane over Luhansk.
The court tries one man - Major General Viktor Nazarov, who was the Chief of Staff of the anti-terrorist operation (ATO) at the moment. He is convicted of the crime under part 3 article 425 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (habitual negligence in office, conducted in war conditions and causing grave consequences).
According to the conclusion of the commission that has carried out a complex military-tactical criminalistic examination, Chief of ATO Staff Major General Viktor Nazarov was the one directly obliged to take measures to suppress air defense of terrorists and ensure the safety of Il-76 flight over Luhansk controlled by the militants on June 14, 2014.
Within the criminal investigation, 132 witnesses have been interrogated, 112 cases of expertise carried out.
