"Ukraine’s landfills in horrible condition and this can go no further," - Hroisman

What happened at Hrybovytske dump site near Lviv is a terrible tragedy, but the landfill is the sole responsibility of the local authorities, the Cabinet has nothing to do with it.

Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Hroisman said during the questions hour in the parliament, Censor.NET correspondent reports.

"What happened in Lviv is a terrible tragedy. I think that it is an open secret that the landfills in Ukraine are in a horrible condition and this can go no further," Hroisman said.

According to him, this issue was solely financial and had to be solved long ago.

"This is the question the local authorities of Lviv to be asked. If there is a need for the government assistance, I am ready to provide it and help resolve this issue. But this is the responsibility of the local authorities. Neither the Cabinet nor state authorities control this landfill and in no way govern its operation," the PM said.

The prime minister intends to instruct the Ecology Ministry to assess the condition of all Ukraine's landfills: "This issue can be solved. I believe that this can be currently accomplished by means of local budgets and efforts of local councils in the context of financial decentralization. There are no problems. If someone has no idea how exactly one should do this or what should one do at all, I can explain it in layman's terms," Hroisman said noting that he had the experience of solving such problem when he occupied the post of the mayor of Vinnytsia.

The prime minister promised to provide assistance to the families of the perished firefighters if local authorities fail to do this.

The body of the third victim in the waste pile slide on the landfill located on the outskirts of Lviv was found late at night on May 31. A mourning for the victims of fire at the dump site was declared in Lviv June 1.

The criminal proceedings were initiated into the accident. The search for the missing employee of the public utilities provider is still underway.
