According to rescuers, some 100,000 cubic meters of waste slid down, causing the dams that held back toxic liquid waste to burst. The rescuers are reinforcing the shores of adjacent lakes in order to prevent the leakage of infiltrates and tars.

The Hrybovytskyi solid waste landfill is located just outside Lviv. It contains some 200,000 to 500,000 tons of tars - waste products of the Lviv Research Oil Refinery Plant. If the tars get into the soil, it may cause poisoning of groundwater and all water sources around the landfill.
