Case of Chiygoz is milestone for Kremlin: they arrest committed activists and break them making example to intimidate Crimean Tatars, - lawyer Polozov

Following the example of Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Ahtem Chiygoz, the invaders prosecute other representatives of the Crimean Tatar people in attempts to intimidate and bring them to heel.

As reported by Censor.NET, this was said by lawyer Nikolai Polozov in an interview with Ukrinform.

"As for Ahtem Chiygoz, one must understand that this case is a milestone for the Russian authorities. Ilmi Umerov is being currently charged with a criminal offence following the example of Chiygoz, Asanov, Didermendzhi. Their overarching objective is to intimidate the Crimean Tatars, suppress their will to resist, force the most ardent of them out of Crimea, and turn the rest of them into that Russian population, into "ragtag and bobtail", which the Crimean Tatars do not want to become," Polozov said.

According to him, "they arrest the most committed and strongest activists and break them making an example of them".

The legal counsel suggests that these methods will be unsuccessful. "They (the Crimean Tatars - Ed.) have a national identity, they remember what the Soviet Union did to their people 75 years ago and they will unlikely kneel to Putin now," Polozov said.

According to Polozov, as for the case of Chiygoz, he is consciously making a sacrifice.

"Ahtem Chiygoz realizes that nobody is going to release him and he consciously sacrifices himself for the good of his people. It's his words," Polozov stressed.
