Ukraine has bought no gas from Russia for more than five months, - Deputy Economy Minister Kovaliv

Ukraine has not purchased natural gas from Russia's gas monopolist Gazprom for more than five months now as it is more profitable for the country to import the fuel from Europe.

As reported by Censor.NET citing UNIAN, First Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine Yuliia Kovaliv said in Kyiv on Friday.

"Today, everything that Naftohaz is doing, it is doing from a business perspective: it buys gas where it is cheaper. We haven't bought gas from Russia for more than five months as it is more expensive there," she said.

Kovaliv also noted that Naftohaz should be a business element in the country rather than a political leverage.

As previously reported, in Q1 2016 Ukraine imported 2.647 billion cubic meters of natural gas totaling $521.7 million. The entire volume of gas was imported from Europe.

On March 31, Naftohaz stated it didn't plan to resume the purchase of gas from Gazprom on April 1, 2016, as the price of Russian gas in Q2 2016 was higher than that of European suppliers.
