114 people still held hostages in Donbas, 11 in Russia. 3,044 Ukrainians released from captivity over two years, - SBU's Tandit

As of May 26, 3,044 Ukrainians have been found or released from captivity.

As reported by Censor.NET citing UNIAN, this was announced by SBU deputy head, chairman of the Coordination Center for the release of hostages Yurii Tandit during the 8th International Conference "Promotion of Democratic Values and Observance of Human Rights in the Activity of Special Services," which kicked off today in Lviv.

According to Tandit, out of 3,044 released and found persons, 1,119 are soldiers, 264 - National Guard fighters, 112 - Interior Ministry officers, 26 - border guards, 67 - military volunteers, and 1,456 - civilians.

He reminded that 114 people are still kept hostages today in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donbas, while 655 are deemed missing.

Tandit said that the SBU does not unveil information about the nearest exchange of prisoners, as not only representatives of the "DPR" hold captives but also warlords who really treat them as hostages, and the announcement of any swap can only do harm.

Tandit added it was easier in some cases to arrange a swap with warlords than with the "DPR". According to him, there were cases when one person could be exchanged for six or 20 people.

Tandit also expressed the belief that freed pilot Nadiia Savchenko, a member of the PACE and Ukraine's MP, could help a great deal in the liberation of hostages held in non-government controlled areas, as well as of 11 political prisoners illegally detained in Russia.
