President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said at a joint press conference with the Ukrainian pilot, Censor.NET reports.
He said that this joyful day was preceded by 709 days when Nadiia was held captive by the militants and imprisoned in the Russian Federation.
"Nadiia returned in Ukraine on this day... We will return Donbas and Crimea just as we returned Nadiia. We are proud of the behavior that Savchenko has demonstrated being in custody," the president said.
He also said that Savchenko's mother and sister were the ones who were waiting for her release more than anyone else. Poroshenko congratulated Nadiia's relatives on her return in Ukraine.
"This was not the first attempt to release her. The previous date was May 22, and before that it was May 18, but these attempts were constantly thwarted…" the president added.
