 One person killed, five injured by explosion in Odesa’s Prymorskyi district

The blast occurred on Posmitnyi Street in the Prymorskyi district of Odesa around 5:30 p.m. May 23.

According to statements of eyewitnesses in social networks, the explosion rocked an apartment on the second floor of a five-storey building. The apartment caught fire after the blast. According to the same sources, a gas main ruptured. The windows were shattered in the apartment as well as in some neighboring flats.

The police have confirmed the fact of the explosion. However, no additional information was disclosed.

Odesa City Council spokeswoman Natalia Maltseva later reported that one person was killed and five were injured by the blast that took place in a residential house on Posmitnyi Street in Odesa.

According to her, this information was preliminary as it was hard to access the apartment damaged by the blast.

An eight-year-old girl, a 25-year-old man and an elderly woman were among the victims. All of them were hospitalized. There is no additional information on other victims yet.

In turn, the National Police Main Directorate in the Odesa region press service has reported that a gas main ruptured, according to preliminary data.
