 Rada extends unauthorized immigrants’ period of stay in Ukraine to 18 months

The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has increased the maximum period of stay in the immigration detention facilities for foreigners and stateless persons unlawfully present in Ukraine from 12 to 18 months.

228 lawmakers supported the bill No. 3159 as a whole at the minimum of 226 MPs required for its adoption, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

According to the draft, the period of stay in the immigration detention facilities for foreigners and stateless persons who have been detained for illegal stay in Ukraine cannot exceed 18 months (the current legislation stipulates for no more than 12 months).

The trials to extend the detention of a foreigner or stateless person are held in absentia or via videoconference.

The term of a foreigner's or stateless person's detention cannot exceed six months.
