 Ukraine’s first printed book disappeared from Vernadskyi National Library, - Library Director

Ukraine’s first printed book the Apostle by Ivan Fiodorov published in 1574 disappeared from the department of rare and early printed books of Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine May 10.

This was stated by library director Volodymyr Popyk, Censor.NET reports citing Radio Svoboda.

According to him, criminal proceedings have been initiated into this fact.

"We are cooperating with the investigative agencies but I will not disclose the details," he said.

The National Police Main Directorate in Kyiv press service informed that the library had not reported on early printed book's disappearance.

According to Oleksandr Morozov, head of the Rare Books Museum of Nizhyn State University named after Mykola Gogol, the Ministry of Culture has long been warning about the possibility of early printed book's theft.

"This book is a rarity among the editions that have been preserved. Therefore, information on the theft should be made public to draw attention to the more steadfast preservation of rare literature," he added.

This edition of the Apostle is of great scientific and historical value as it is the first book printed in Ukraine. There are more than 90 copies of this book. The book contains the Church translation of the Acts and Epistles of the Apostles.Источник: https://en.censor.net.ua/n388636
