MPs vote down bill allowing Lutsenko to become prosecutor general

Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine have failed to adopt the bill No. 4469 making possible to appoint a candidate without experience in the prosecution authorities as prosecutor general.

Censor.NET parliamentary correspondent informs.

The bill was supported by 224 MPs out of 226 required. 221 lawmakers supported rerun of a vote. Rada Speaker Andrii Parubii closed the evening session of the parliament after the unsuccessful vote.

According to one of the authors of the bill - Poroshenko Bloc MP Serhii Aleksieiev - this law "was not made for one person's favor but was aimed to get rid of corruption in the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine".

Andrii Parubii said that the bill was registered March 19 and its 500 copies were distributed among the lawmakers April 21.

Batkivshchyna faction MP Serhii Vlasenko said in response that manipulations were constantly taking place in the parliament. He said that a different version of bill No. 4469 was submitted May 10.

"There is no bill of April 19 mentioned by Parubii. Its text was made public on the website a minute ago. I know no one able to read bills released just a few minutes ago," Vlasenko said.

According to MP Yurii Levchenko (Svoboda party), if the bill is passed it will make possible to convict in absentia people taking part in the anti-terrorist operation.
