Svoboda plans no rallies in Odesa on April 28, - party statement

Svoboda political party is not going to hold any rallies on April 28 to mark the setting up of the Halychyna SS division - a World War II German military formation initially made up of volunteers from the region of Galicia (western Ukraine).

Censor.NET reports citing party press service.

The statement notes: "The press service of the All-Ukrainian Union Svoboda informs the public and the media that our Union will not hold any activities on April 28, 2016 on the occasion of the anniversary of establishing the Halychyna division neither in Odesa nor in any other locality of Ukraine.

"The information that has been spread by the press service of Svoboda regional branch in Odesa is an entirely private initiative of individual members of the party, who used the official mail of press service. Their initiative was not discussed and agreed with the central office of the party."

In turn, MP Anton Herashchenko wrote on Facebook: "Today, a number of Ukrainian media, to the delight of Russia's propagandists, spread news that Svoboda regional branch in Odesa is allegedly going to hold a march to commemorate the 73d anniversary of setting up the Halychyna SS division.

"On the eve of the mourning events dedicated to the 2nd anniversary of the Odesa tragedy of May 2, 2014 this "news" has had a bombshell effect.

"Svoboda has made no decision of the kind. It neither planned nor plans any march.

"An attempt to create a provocation in media has failed.

"I request the editors of the Ukrainian media to stay vigilant and recheck the sources of "explosive" provocative information before launching it on air or the Internet."
