 War between Armenia and Azerbaijan starts as hostilities escalate in Nagorno-Karabakh

Hostilities escalated in Nagorno-Karabakh on Friday night. Armenia claims that Azerbaijan initiated a military offensive along the border with the use of artillery, aviation, and tanks. Official Baku says they launched an offensive after some residential areas were shelled by the Armenian side.

On Saturday, Artsrun Hovhannisyan, spokesman of Armenia's defense ministry announced that Azerbaijan initiated a military offensive. Armed clashes are reported along the border with Nagorno-Karabakh. According to recent data, between 40 and 50 people were killed only on the part of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces.

According to the NKR (the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic the territory of which is contested by Azerbaijan and Armenia) Ministry of Defense, collisions started in the southern (Hadrut) and north-east (Martakert) directions. In the south-east, the Karabakh army eliminated two Azerbaijani tanks, while in the north-east they destroyed a tank and a drone. In addition, it is reported that two military helicopters of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces were downed.

Besides the clashes on the front line, artillery strikes on peaceful settlements and places of permanent deployment of military units are reported, the NKR Defense Ministry reports. A 12-year-old boy, Vaginak Grigoryan was killed as a result of shelling of residential areas with Grads. Another two children were injured, the press service of the ministry added.

As the Armenian edition EAdaily reports, the Azerbaijani units seized five positions of the Armenian forces on the plains in the Martakert region. The Azerbaijani army continues holding three positions. As of Saturday noon, the attacking army of Azerbaijan, according to the media, lost three tanks, three armored personnel carriers, two helicopters, and two drones.

In turn, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reports about massive shelling by the Armenian side. They inform about 127 cases of cease-fire violations on the line of collision over the past 24 hours. The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry refuted the information about the allegedly downed helicopter. They added that an Armenian shell hit the house of IDP Jalal Rahimov in Terter region. The man was killed, while his son lost his leg.
