 Seven police officers hospitalized after conflict with amber miners in Rivne region, - National Police

Seven police officers received injuries as a result of a clash with amber diggers in the Rivne region.

As reported, Sarny police department's control room received two notifications of illegal extraction of amber on March 29. In the morning, a forestry worker reported that nearly 30 miners were digging for amber in Mokh area of Klesivske forestry. A similar notification was received in the afternoon, while the number of miners rose to fifty people.

As noted, in both cases when an operative group arrived to document the criminal offence, the miners offered resistance to law enforcers, used foul language, and threatened with physical violence. In addition, the diggers blocked the passage to motor pumps with cars in order to avoid the registration of violations and further removal of the equipment for illegal mining.

"At 11:40 a.m., March 30, in Halbin area, a metal trailer used as a stationary checkpoint to ensure public safety and order was set ablaze by some 30 people. Moreover, in the morning, about thousand people blocked the road to Smitnyk area in the vicinity of Klesiv. The miners threatened police officers and offered resistance. As a result of a clash that followed, seven law enforcers were hospitalized with injuries," press office notes.

The police have instituted criminal proceedings under part 2, article 342 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine upon the fact of resisting law enforcers. Pre-trial investigation is underway.
