National Anti-corruption Bureau Director Artem Sytnyk reported President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on a high-profile case of a judge, who was caught receiving a 500,000 hryvnia bribe.

President's press secretary Sviatoslav Tseholko wrote on Facebook, Censor.NET reports.

He said: "The director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau has informed the president on the special operation to detain a judge, who received a bribe in the amount of 500,000 hryvnia (about $18,500). The judge employed firearms and fled taking advantage of his immunity. The president instructed the Security Service to take all measures for his detention..."

The statement on the official website of NABU reads: "On Tuesday, March 29, detectives of the National Anti-corruption Bureau of Ukraine in conjunction with local police officers have exposed one of the judges of Malynovskyi district court of Odesa when he was receiving a bribe in the amount of 500,000 hryvnia.

"The official extorted these funds through an intermediary for delivery of a certain judgment in a civil action into debt recovery. The judge showed resistance as the detectives were trying to carry out investigative actions, made several shots at them. He put the gun away after that and fled the scene, taking advantage of the inviolability of judges.

"NABU detectives carry out pre-trial investigation of the criminal case initiated under Part 4 of the Article 368 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (bribetaking).

"The raids and other urgent investigative actions are currently underway. Possible complicity of deputy chairman of the Malynovskyi district court of Odesa in the crime is being checked.

"This operation has once again confirmed the fact that stripping judges and MPs of their immunity is an integral part of the efficient fight against corruption."
