Gongadze was killed in fall 2000. On March 15, 2008 Kyiv Appeal Court convicted three former Interior Ministry employees of his murder - Valerii Kostenko, Mykola Protasov, and Oleksandr Popovych. They were sentenced from 12 to 13 years in prison.
In January 2013, former head of the outdoor surveillance department of the Interior Ministry Oleksii Pukach was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of the journalist. Gongadze's family believes that the hirers of the killing remain at large.
