US provided $265 million in security assistance to Ukraine. Providing lethal weapons would be out of time, - US Ministry of Defense

Since the start of the conflict in the Donbas, the U.S. has provided $265 million in security assistance to Ukraine.

Michael Carpenter, deputy assistant secretary of defense with responsibilities for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia said in an interview to Voice of America, Censor.NET reports.

"Since the start of the conflict, the U.S. has provided $265 million in security assistance to Ukraine. This equipment has gone to - or this assistance, rather, has gone to - a variety of different types of equipment, from counter battery radars to night vision equipment, secure communications, vehicles, and patrol boats," he said.

Answering the question why the U.S. does not give Ukraine lethal weapons, Carpenter said that such actions would be out of time today given the current state of the Ukrainian army.

Over two decades, the Ukrainian armed forces were significantly hollowed out through corruption and could not resist Russia, he added.

Thus, according to Carpenter, the United States should help the Ukrainian Army become more combat-ready at this stage of the reform, and later to upgrade it to the standards of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
