 Up to 300 tons of amber illegally mined in Ukraine each year, with shadow market reaching $300 million, - Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources

Illegal extraction of amber causes big harm to the environment.

As reported by Censor.NET referring to Ukrinform, this was stated by Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Svitlana Kolomiiets.

"Every year, according to various estimates, 120-300 tons of amber are mined in Ukraine. The size of shadow market makes $200-300 million," the official said.

At the same time, she said, the illegal extraction of amber harms the environment.

"In the Zhytomyr region, the illegal production of amber resulted in 220 hectares of damaged soil, in the Volyn region - four hectares, in the Rivne region - 169 hectares," the deputy minister stated.
