This was stated by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, Censor.NET reports referring to UNIAN.
Clapper said that despite the reduction in the number of armed clashes between the Ukrainian military and Russian-supported terrorists in the Donbas, the Kremlin will continue to exert a long-term impact on Kyiv and frustrate Ukraine's efforts to integrate with Western institutions.
The events in Ukraine encourage Moscow to strengthen its presence in the region to prevent regime changes in the former Soviet republics and accelerate the transition to a multipolar world in which Russia holds an undisputed leading role in Eurasia, the official stressed.
According to Clapper, in 2016 Russia will increase pressure on its neighbors to make them join the Eurasian Economic Union under the leadership of Moscow, uniting Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan so far.
