 "We will stand by police officers who respond to offenses," - Avakov on night chase

Interior Minister Arsen Avakov commented on the night car chase with shooting, which took place in Kyiv on Feb. 7.

"Yes, there are sentiments. This is the first time the new police have used weapon and, unfortunately, a man was killed. But he did not die because of the police, but because, behaving inadequately, they provoked this situation," Avakov said.

According to the interior minister, the police is an enforcement authority. Therefore, in cases when a vehicle is moving at a speed of 190 km/h across the city, ignoring warnings and escaping from patrol cars, weapon will be used. The validity of its employment is to be established by prosecution.

At the same time, National Police Chief Khatia Dekanoidze added that the incident was one of those where the police had to act exactly in the way it acted: "There are cases where police officers have to be tough - they have such a right."

As previously reported, four young men drove across the city in a BMW at a speed of almost 190 km/h, ignoring the demands to pull up. Police officers were forced to employ weapons against the offenders, who might have jeopardized the lives of occasional passers-by.
