General Prosecutor's Office established new department which ‘may help Kononenko achieve political goals,’ – Leshchenko

A new department was created by the General Prosecutor's Office to the benefit of Poroshenko Bloc deputy Ihor Kononenko.

Poroshenko Bloc deputy Serhii Leshchenko declared, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainska Pravda.

Serhii Leshchenko noted that the new department of the GPU "can help Kononenko achieve political objectives."

"On Feb. 5, 2016, Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin signed an order to establish a department of investigation and supervision of criminal activities in the public services and property sectors. At the same time, the GPU department that investigates corruption crimes committed by high-profile officials was liquidated," Leshchenko said.

According to him, the declared purpose of the new department - fight against corruption - sounds "quite strange, considering the establishment of an independent National Anti-Corruption Bureau, as well as the existence of the GPU's priority cases investigation department," the parliamentarian said, reminding that 51 employees will work in the new department, which is twice as much as the staff of the liquidated departments.
