Flu claimed lives of 122 Ukrainians this fall-winter season, - acting chief sanitary officer

122 fatal cases caused by influenza and acute respiratory disease have been recorded in Ukraine since the beginning of the fall-winter season 2015-2016.

Acting Chief Sanitary Officer of Ukraine Sviatoslav Protas reported at the meeting of the Verkhovna Rada Health Committee, Censor.NET informs citing Interfax-Ukraine.

He noted that there were two children and two paramedics among those who died of flu and ARD during the period.

The highest death rate due to influenza has been recorded in the Odesa region (22 persons).

Protas noted that all those who died of influenza were not vaccinated and requested medical attention too late.

He said that the Ministry of Health started recording morbidity rate since Oct. 1 2015, while the highest rate was recorded after the New Year.

At the same time, Protas paid attention to low vaccination level among health care workers.

"35,676 health care workers are currently immunized against influenza. This vaccination is carried out at the expense of local budgets, which lack funds," he said.

In turn, head of the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada Olha Bohomolets expressed opinion on the need to make amendments to the state budget that would provide for allocation of funds for the compulsory immunization of health care workers and groups of the population vulnerable to influenza. However, she did not specify the required amount of finance.
