 UN assessment mission in Donbas stabilization to start in Ukraine

United Nations mission tasked to assess stabilization in the Donbas will start its work today, on Jan. 23.

The OSCE SMM report reads, Censor.NET reports citing Channel 112.

The mission will consist of representatives of United Nations Development Program, UNICEF and UN Mine Action Service. It is scheduled that the mission will meet with Ukrainian officials in Kyiv and visit the Donbas region in order to study the situation on the ground, particularly in the sphere of humanitarian demining.

Ukrainian Permanent Representative to the UN, Volodymyr Yelchenko, said earlier that they planned to organize a trip of permanent representatives from the member countries of the UN Security Council to the Donbas in order to convince them of the need to deploy a peacekeeping operation.

In order to start negotiations on this subject, it is necessary for the UN Secretariat to visit Ukraine with an assessment mission that will deal with many local issues directly on the spot.

The mission will include representatives of the UN Development Programme, the UNICEF and the UN Mine Action Service.
