Ukrainian army to meet NATO standards in three-five years, Defense Minister says

It will take three to five years for the Ukrainian Armed Forces to meet NATO standards.

Minister of Defense of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak said in an interview to Ukrainski Novyny, Censor.NET reports.

"How long will it take for us to conform to the standard and principles of creation of the army able to apply for NATO membership? Speaking of the terms, I think that we are quite capable to reform the system of the Ministry of Defense within three years. We can achieve it having necessary funding. We need more time in order to reform the Armed Forces completely. It will take about five years since we have to change almost everything. This reform will take three-five years," Poltorak said.

The defense minister noted that it was difficult to start the process of reform in the Armed Forces of Ukraine because of the hostilities.

"When there were times of relative lull, we had got the opportunity to plan the work. The reform program is at completion stage and I think that we will be ready to present it in the first months of the next year (2016 - Ed.). But it does not mean that the reform has not yet begun," the minister said.
