Owners of only seven minor Ukrainian banks still unknown to NBU, Hontarieva says

The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) possesses information on the ownership of almost all Ukrainian banks except for seven minor ones.

Head of the National Bank of Ukraine Valeria Hontarieva said, Censor.NET informs citing 112 Ukraine.

"The level of transparency of the banking system is 98 percent. We do not know the owners of only seven small banks. The banks that will fail to submit information about their owners before the end of this year will be recognized as problematic," she said.

"27 percent of the banking system was non-transparent. We were aware of the actual owners of some banks, who were hiding behind the so-called football and National Olympic teams. But in many cases we did not even know who in fact was the main shareholder of a bank," the NBU head added.

"Also significant amounts of loans were allocated to related parties - it was the "oligarchs' banking" in other words. This is one of the main issues of the banking system," Hontarieva stressed.
