EC's decision on sanctions against Russia takes effect

The decision of the EU Council on the extension of economic sanctions against Russia over its military aggression in the Donbas until July 31, 2016 has entered into force.

Censor.NET reports referring to EU's Offical Journal.

Restrictive measures against the Russian economy shall apply until July 31, 2016.

"On March 19, 2015, the European Council agreed that the necessary measures would be taken to clearly link the duration of the restrictive measures to the complete implementation of the Minsk agreements," the document reads.

As also noted, considering that the Minsk agreements will not be completely implemented by Dec. 31, 2015, the sanctions should therefore be renewed for a further six months in order to enable the Council to further assess the implementation of those agreements.

This decision shall enter into force on the date of its publication.

As reported, on Dec. 21, the Council extended sectoral economic sanctions against Russia for another six months until July 31, 2016.
