General Prosecutor's Office says renewal of local prosecution offices failed

Very few new people managed to get positions in local prosecution offices, despite an open contest held for this purpose.

This was announced by deputy Prosecutor General Vitalii Kasko on air of Hromadske radio, Censor.NET reports.

According to him, none of the candidates who have been appointed by Prosecutor General are external candidates. 84% of those appointed used to occupy positions of district prosecutor's offices' heads, some of them since 2010, when Yanukovych came to power. They cannot be purged for the purging law only covers those who worked at this level in Kyiv, Kasko informed.

However, he says, not all of these prosecutors are bad.

"Unfortunately, this idea by [deputy head of PGO - ed.] Sakvarelidze about bringing new people to the prosecutor's offices failed. ... Not all of the commission members who were suggested by Davit Sakvarelidze have been appointed, because the prosecutor general thought otherwise. All these changes led to the result that we have now," Kasko said and added that prosecution reform is key. The reform of criminal justice will not be possible without it.

Earlier, Prosecutor General Viktor Shokin appointed 154 new heads of consolidated local prosecutor's offices.
