Ukraine should prepare for accession to NATO membership, - Foreign Ministry

Ukraine must focus on strategic objectives and prepare for accession to NATO membership as well as discuss what changes it will cause in the Euro-Atlantic security architecture.

Head of the International Security Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Serhii Shutenko said at a press conference, Censor.NET reports citing UNIAN.

According to him, the political dialogue between Ukraine and NATO strengthened last year, and real integration of Ukraine into the Euro-Atlantic security space continued.

"Collective security and accession to NATO membership is our strategic goal," he said.

"We are on the right track since the Verkhovna Rada has adopted decision to abandon the non-aligned status," Shutenko said.

"We should not only focus on tactical purposes, which involve conformity with the requirements of transition to NATO standards and the reform of the defense sector, we must look beyond the horizon, where the horizon is our NATO membership. I believe that we need to talk about changes at this stage, and the changes will be tectonic when the country becomes a member," the representative of the Foreign Ministry said.

"These are the changes in the architecture of the Euro-Atlantic security, collective security, and we should have already been preparing for it and talk about it," Shutenko said.
