Reinstating energy cooperation with Russia depends on Minsk agreements implementation, - EU

EU Commissioner for Energy and Climate Action Miguel Arias Cañete said Thursday that the energy dialogue between Russia and the EU is fully contingent on the implementation of the Minsk agreements by Russia.

As soon as the cooperation is restored, he added, the EU will continue to implement the "third energy package" and ensure that any infrastructure built within the EU acts in full compliance with the European legislation.

When asked if the recent tension in relations between Russia and Turkey was a good opportunity to restart talks with Moscow on alternatives to South Stream project, the commissioner said the European Union is currently setting a high-level dialogue with Turkey, adding it would become a very important country in terms of transit in future.

As for the EU's diversification strategy, the development of the Southern Corridor where Turkey comes as a crucial partner is highly supported, Cañete said, adding that only a few final administrative issues are left before the initiative is given full swing.
