According to him, the jet was fired at while in Turkish air space but crashed inside Syria.

Erdogan says he does not want escalation - Russian Su-24 was destroyed as Turkey acted simply to defend its own security and the "rights of our brothers" in Syria.

As previously reported, the Turkish Air Force shot down a Russian Su-24 bomber near the Syrian border on Tuesday after 10 warnings over air space violation. Later it became known that one of the pilots said to be Russia's Sergey Rumiantsev was killed. The second pilot is alive and in base.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called the incident with the downed Russian warplane "stab in the back." He also said that the Russian aircraft was not threatening Turkey as it "was shot down 1 km away from its border."

Turkish Prime Minister Mehmet Davutoglu said the country had the right to defend its borders.
