 Foreign Ministry urges Russia to stop reprisals against Ukrainian political prisoners

Such actions of the Russian side are beyond the scope of law and morality.

Foreign Ministry demands Russia to immediately stop bullying Ukrainians held in the Russian prisons for political reasons. Spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mariana Betsia stated at a press briefing, Censor.NET informs citing Ukrainska Pravda.

She recalled that the Russian authorities convicted Ukrainian national Hennadii Afanasiev under trumped-up charges and "sent him to the colony in the Komi Republic."

"Following the statement by Hennadii Afanasiev during the trial of Oleh Sentsov and Oleksandr Kolchenko renouncing his earlier testimony given under torture, he keeps being bullied and ill-treated in a penal colony," the Foreign Ministry stated.

Mariana Betsia said that Afanasiev's health had deteriorated, but "he did not receive medical assistance."

"We strongly condemn such actions of the Russian side, which go beyond the scope of law and morality," - Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

In this regard, the Foreign Ministry summoned the Russian consul, who was "voiced demands for an immediate admission of Ukrainian consular officers to a prisoner ... inspection of actions of the Russian employees of the relevant authorities as well as bringing to justice those guilty in violations of Afanasiev's rights."

"We demand the Russian Federation to immediately restore respect for the principles and norms of international law, stop political lynching of the citizens of Ukraine and release all Ukrainian citizens - political prisoners, who are held in Russia," Mariana Betsia said.
