 Chief Military Prosecutor Matios names cause of fire at ammunition depot in Svatove

The cause of the fire and explosions at the ammunition depot in the Luhansk region’s Svatove is negligence of officials.

Chief Military Prosecutor of Ukraine, Deputy Prosecutor General Anatolii Matios said on air of Hromadske.TV, Censor.NET reports.

"The cause of the fire and explosions at the ammunition depot in Svatove is negligence of officials, in particular, the chief of this depot. It is negligence of officials," he said.

The Prosecutor General's Office has estimated that the ammunition destroyed during the fire was worth of 134 million hryvnia (over $5.5 million). According to preliminary version, the cause of fire was the flare that ignited the boxes of ammunition. The General Staff was considering various reasons, including a terrorist attack. The Security Service of Ukraine determined the explosions of ammunition near Svatove as a terrorist act that caused deaths of people.

The series of explosions rocked the ammunition depot of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the city of Svatove in the Luhansk region Oct. 29, where 3.5 tonnes of ammunition had been stored. Four people were killed. The SBU determined the explosions of ammunition near Svatove were a terrorist attack.
