 Introduction of UN peacekeeping mission in Donbas becomes vital, - General Staff

Chief of Main Directorate of Military Cooperation & Peacekeeping Operations Lieutenant General Leonid Holopatiuk has held bilateral talks with United Nations Deputies Secretary-General during his working visit to the United Nations Headquarters.

The parties discussed the participation of national contingents and personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the UN peacekeeping and security operations as well as furter prospects of cooperation.

Lieutenant General Leonid Holopatiuk underlined the importance of personal security of each peacekeeper and stressed that the Government of Ukraine would not reduce its contribution to strengthening the global security despite the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the ongoing conflict in the east of Ukraine.

Leonid Holopatiuk took part in the meetings of the Fourth Committee (Special Political and Decolonization) of the United Nations General Assembly held at the UN Headquarters. He noted in his remarks that the deployment of the United Nations peacekeepers in Ukraine might become a very efficient tool of the implementation of the Minsk agreements.

Holopatiuk has stressed the need to deploy an international UN peacekeeping mission in the east of Ukraine since the mentioned question is of vital importance at the present stage. The Ukrainian representative has dwelled on the issue of continued external aggression on the part of the Russian Federation in Ukraine in the course of the meeting.

"Ukraine as one of the main and largest contributors of forces and means of international efforts to maintain peace and security has moral grounds to count on help from the United Nations in this difficult period," he stressed.

According to Lt. Gen., the situation in the east of Ukraine is very far from peaceful in spite of the cease-fire, and the conflict may escalate at any moment.
